All right. Imagine this, if we end up with the Cousins of Mercy's filks, Brian Howell's filks, the Best of Weird Al and other classics like "Banned from Argo", "Murderous Toy" etc, all collected in a single book, printed cheaply and purchasable at the convention on a not-for-profit basis. Would we actually have to look up how to send Yankovic and Leslie Fish royalties, or is this doable? Because no-one seems to have a "complete collection" of all the filks we love.

We'd definitely need explicit permission from all the writers to be included; otherwise, it does sound like a great idea. Possibly a Kiwi Filk Book would be more practical? A lot of what we tend to sing is homegrown.

How about music - would we want to include chords, or even proper dots and lines? I suspect it would be effectively impossible to get permission to print sheet music for some of the more recent tunes, but filks based on traditional tunes wouldn't be a problem. No idea on the legal status of chords.

When you say "Brian Howell's filks" I presume you mean Infiltraitors Ink! (originally Meadow Mushrooms). There were at least 4 of us - myself (Jenner), Brian, Conner and Barbara (sometimes 6) involved in writing those filks. A lot of them have been published in 2 volumes back in the day but I still have the originals. If people are interested I could re-print some and bring them along.  I will have all our filks loaded on my tablet with backing tracks to travel - including all the favourites and quite a few that Conner and I wrote (and liked) but didn't always make it into the live gigs.

Presumably, yes - we just know them as "the ones Brian sings" 8) Yes, it would be fantastic if you could bring some re-prints along to the con! Would you be interested in having some included in a big Kiwi Filk Book? Though I think that would be a project for after the con, at this stage...

I assume you're working on something for the filk competition?

I am happy to have some included in a big Kiwi Filk Book. I am sure Brian and Barbara will give their approvals depending on which songs are picked. It would be good to have ones that Conner helped write done in memorium to her - I know she would have approved of them being printed. I will start work on both the reprints and a filk or two. Some of our best have become international favourites so it should be easy to choose the likely suspects for a kiwi book - thinking of Star Trek 64, 50 Ways to Kill Wes Crusher, Picard's Lament, Companion Number 9, Alien Life-forms in the Cargo Bay, to name a few.

Slight change of plan on the Infilktraitors Ink! reprints.

1) I realised just how many filks we (collectively and individually) wrote

2) the original books are too old and faded to copy and some good stuff isn't in them

3) I also realised, as I made sure they were all on my computer, that nobody still carries around big cumbersome folders of filks, surely? I know mine are all, like my real songs, on my tablet.

So - new plan - I will be bringing cds carrying text files of all our stuff. It will be called "Infilk 101: 101 of the best and worst (and everything in between) of Infilktraitors Ink!" and will contain, as above, 101 filks written by Infilktraitor members, (yes  - we have written that many) PLUS the entire, unabridged "Blake the Musical" (yes - we did filk Grease!) AND some extra bonus tracks of songs written by Infilk collaborators and sung by Infilk. I am expecting to be able to sell the cds for under $5 each (depends on the cost of writing them).

Yes, folders are still popular 8) But CDs would be great, especially for that many songs; I'm very much looking forward to Blake!
